Long Artist Statement: Eric Nunez
My artwork in porp culture this semester deals with famous musicians, film characters, and historic figures for entertainment, knowledge, motivation, and or ambition. For my first assignment, I painted John Lennon, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Michael Myers with Jason Vorhees. These four characters have increased my knowledge about Eisenhower during World War two, rock and roll music with John Lennon, and horror movie slashers such as Michael and Jason. Each painting for my first assignment focuses on a different aspect such as famous music with John Lennon of The Beatles, Dwight D. Eisenhower with U.S. history and World War two history, while Jason and Michael concentrate on knowledge of horror history throughout the films that Jason and Michael came out in dealing with entertainment. Following my first assignment, my second paintings of dictators deal with good and evil in the knowledge of what Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini did. Although these dictators of the last century did few good things for their country such as bringing back the economy and coming up with great plans for some of their personal cabinet government, most of their good deeds were done to get into power by force and when full control was grasped, they reveal their evil plan. The Hitler painting shows him in a Jesus Christ posture and clothes to resemble him as a good person in disguise but in reality, he is a bad person that can maybe be forgiven if he repented for his sins before he died. Like the Hitler painting, the Joseph Stalin artpiece is similar in that the painting focuses on the good and bad outcomes Stalin did for the Soviet Union such as the killings of millions of people which include thieves, rapists, murderers, prostitutes, and the like. Even though he had a lot of innocent civilians killed as well, with the death of criminals mentioned above, he made the Soviet Union somewhat a safer place and turned it to a super power after the war. The same can be said of Mussolini, he like Hitler are not only horrible dictators but traitors. Hitler a traitor to Russia and Mussolini a traitor to his own country by siding with Hitler deals with life after death by including the words Judas, and ninth circle of hell as a sign that as a traitor just like Judas, he like Adolf can go to hell if he did not repent for all the killings he caused.
For my final assignment, I put my focus on famous musicians who died at the young age of twenty-seven. The musicians that died at the age of twenty-seven are known as the twenty-seven club. I painted Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones; these musicians happen to be my favorite artists via musically as that is the reason why I chose them. Their untimely death to drugs and alcohol in their prime made these musicians legends and largely recognized worldwide. My first painting shows Jim Morrison in a World War two German army uniform as a symbol that he is his own dictator to his drug and alcohol abuse. He had the chance to kick his habit but lose the battle with his addiction. I see his World War two German uniform as the drugs and alcohol controlling him just like Hitler had control of Germany. It was an ongoing battle that Jim was having but lost in the end just like Nazi Germany. The next musician which is as talented as Jim Morrison that I painted as well is Rolling Stone member Brian Jones. He is clothed in black as a symbol for death. Since Brian Jones is dressed in a long black hat and black clothes, my goal for this painting is to show that he is dressed in funeral clothing to shows he has become death himself. Brian Like Jim had a struggle with drugs and alcohol that ended up taking his life as well. Even though he and Jim will be known even after their death, their talent was wasted due to their addiction to drugs and alcohol. An important message to take as well is that money does not make you happy, as a matter of fact, it brings more problems at times. The last painting of this assignment I created is a portrait of Jimi Hendrix. Just like Brian Jones and Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix suffered the same fate as them in that he lost the struggle against drugs and alcohol. I painted him with a hospital patient gown to signify the sickness that drugs were causing him deep inside. Sometimes we are unaware that we are sick when in reality we truly are but refuse to believe it. This is the case in Hendrix's situation, that although he did not get sick physically from drugs at first, his addiction to it eventually got him killed other than really sick physically. My other goal for these three paintings in my last assignment is that although drugs make someone feel better at times, it only worsens their situation because addiction to drugs and alcohol can lead to serious consequences and death.
I find that oil on canvas is the perfect medium for me which is why I chose to stick with this whole semester. Working in small canvases ranging from 8 x 8 to 8 x 10 is my personal preference since I feel comfortable working this way. First, I start with the drawing of the artwork I am going to work with on canvas in order to make my work look great. The next step is applying the first paint layer to get my painting into shape. After that comes my second paint layer which starts to make my painting look realistic but at the same time almost complete. The last step in my process is my third and final layer which at this stage once it is completed, my artpiece is full of detail and texture available to be fully critiqued. During these three painting assignments, I only used a small brush since I like to be as detailed as I can with my artpieces. It is something imbedded in me that I have to be as detailed as I can in order to make my pieces look great. Without the small details of texture, I will feel my work is not complete and well done.
Before I start painting the people I have chosen to paint, I do some research about what the figures I have chosen are known for. Since I have a passion for hearing music, I chose Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, and Jim Morrison because they are musicians that I admire musically and love their music. I have always been intrigued as to how these musicians are gifted musically but how they fall short to failure due to their habit to drugs and alcohol. I change their clothes to resemble how messed up they are deep inside by having a bad lifestyle and I include my choice of clothes that best suits them in my viewpoint. Since Brian, Jimi, and Jim died at the age of twenty-seven, they are known for being in the twenty-seven club that has famous musicians in it that passed away too soon. For my dictator work, I chose Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini which were one of the worst dictators that ever lived in the last century. I enjoy reading World War Two books about the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany to find out more about each dictator at hand. Movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Enemy At The Gates, Schindler's List, Life is Beautiful, and Downfall feed my knowledge on the atrocities that Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini commited. Even past classes in college and high school such as world history made me more aware of what these dictators did. The first assignment that I painted of Eisenhower was done by finding out that not only was he a president, but that he was actually a general in World War Two first. He along with Douglas MacArthur are one of the few five star generals that the U.S. has had. Since Eisenhower made America into a better country for us American citizens, I felt that irt was my duty as an american citizen to honor him for what he did for the United States such as freeing the world from Nazi Germany and bringing freedom to Germany. My other painting of John Lennon with the British flag shows him wearing an American Revolution British British uniform similar to the clothes John wore in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The colors of the uniform he has of the British uniform are the same as the outfit he has in Sgt. Peppers. Since The Beatles and John Lennon are British, I decided to put a British flag to honor The Beatles and John Lennon. The UK flag still looks the same as today so there was no need to put another British flag. My artpiece of Michael and Jason remind me of a film called Freddy vs. Jason. This artwork is about a movie that was long anticipated but never happened. Since there are a wide variety of films that Jason Vorhess and Michael Myers came out in, I decided to make a tribute of it into one film where Jason and Michael have a showdown. Since this artpiece is about pop culture in horror movie culture, I made this artwork for horror movie fans who enjoy horror movies for entertainment.
My artwork in my point of view seeks to ask questions more than answers since my audience do not fully know why I painted these figures. What my viewers would want to know is why I decided to paint the people I chose. Another would be as to why I changed their clothes into something entirely different. And another question can be as to why I chose to paint only in oil. All these questions are answered earlier on in the statement but I shall say it again. The reason why I chose to paint these characters is because I have some knowledge about them. I find what they did is interesting in a way that makes me want to learn more and I find them very important in history via for entertainment, knowledge, or ambition. I decided to change their clothes to closely resemble some part of their lives that relate to what I see of them and parts of their lives that were either good and or bad. This semester I decided to paint in oil on canvas again because that is my favorite medium to work with. Oil gives my paintings texture and detail that I cannot seem to capture with acrylic or watercolor. I do enjoy painting in other mediums but I stay with oil because with oil paint, I always get the results I want.
By looking at my paintings and researching before hand in order to paint, my historical influences in my painting include dictators such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Benito Mussolini during World War Two. Another historical reference is general and president Dwight D. Eisenhower who fought for freedom and rights from these three dictators. When it comes to cultural references, I get my motivation from wide known characters that are famous which include John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. All these cultural icons have pushed my artwork to be as creative as I can be in order to expand my mind to new concepts that I have not explored before. Since music, history, and famous people have influenced me to make these paintings, I feel that music is related to my life which is why I also decided to include musicians in my paintings.
In my second painting of dictators, there is a political message that must be grasped not only by the government, but for citizens as well. My paintings of Joseph, Adolf, and Benito show that there will be many people appearing to be good in government affiliations but when power is gained, they will do horrible things and then it will be too late to do anything. These paintings are a balance between some good government deeds and horrible choices that overcome the few good things government officials do. My artwork pieces show me that with power comes great responsibility but few people use it for real good and it ends up getting out of their hands. The paintings of the twenty-seven club members who died at a young age focus on how early musicians who changed rock and roll music will inspire new coming artists to become great just like past musicians that came before them. There will always be new musicians who have been motivated and challenged by their favorite past artists which is what I also aim for in my work.
All together, my artwork has given me a chance to express myself musically with the artists I have chosen and that have forever changed rock and roll music. My goal for these paintings via for influence or knowledge have had a great impact in the way I see art and the way I work and for that reason, I want to share that experience with my fellow audience.
